Week 1

Class

In the first week, our class began with the lecturer giving an introduction to the module along with reviewing the MIB. We then engaged in some icebreaker activities to get to know each other and had a Q&A session about the module. Finally, we were briefed on safety rules and details about the fashion department. We were advised to navigate the studio and its equipment with precision and care.

Assignment Progress

I used the Xmind application to draft and plan out the content for my mind maps. It helped me navigate ideas and expand them easily, making the final presentation smoother to put together.

I used Canva to design the final layout of my mind maps before putting it into presentation slides.

Week 2

Class

In the second week, we started on our first assignment. We researched about the definition of essential fashion as well as the top famous fashion designers in previous and in current times. We then showed our developed mind maps to the lecturer to check our progress and make corrections if needed to.

Assignment Progress

Here is the screenshots of the development of my top 5 famous fashion designers in current times.

Week 3

Class

In the third week, we continued working on the development of our mind maps. The lecturer gave us each some personal inputs on how to improve our mind maps, which I greatly appreciated as well as implemented in my final min map production. We had also received a briefing on our second assignment and were asked to prepare materials like a mannequin and some white shirts for it.

Assignment Progress

In this week, I have finished up the last of the presentation slides for task 1.

Week 4

Class

In the fourth week, we had begin to start on our second assignment, in which we are to deconstruct a number of white shirts to create unique and fashionable garments. We were required to come up with a total of 9 garments which consists of 3 sleeves, 3 pockets, and 3 collars all together. Meanwhile, we had also finalized and submitted our first assignment by this week through MyTimes.

Assignment Progress

I have started on my assignment 2 and came up with some deconstructed garments as my progress.

Week 5

Class

In the fifth week, at the start of our class, we had done a cup artwork for the Taylor's Design School Showcase for Fahrenheit88. Once we have completed the 9 garment pieces, our lecturer instructed us to outline the image of the garments. Once we were done with that, our lecturer had personally discussed with us to select two garments for our final from our nine pieces.

Assignment Progress

I had made progress on the rest of the garments for our second assignment.

Week 6

Class

In week six, our lecturer gave us a detailed briefing on the design sketches that we will need to draw out. We would need to sketch 10 new designs inspired from each of  the 2 selected garments, which ends up to a total of 20 design sketches. Our lecturer had also explained to us about the production of our moodboard and its required content.

Assignment Progress

I had finished the last of my garments for our second assignment.

Week 7

Class

In week seven, our class coincided with a public holiday, so our lecturer had arranged a replacement class so we wouldn't have to miss out on assignment discussions. During the replacement class, I worked on my 20 design sketches all while getting the opinion from my lecturer. Later this week, I had also dropped by to get some input from my lecturer about the making of my moodboard.

Assignment Progress

This is my progress of my 20 design sketches that I did during the replacement class.

Week 8

Class

On week 8, when class has commenced I had already completed my moodboard along with my 20 design sketches and printed it out in A3 format for my lecturer to finalize and approve with me. We had a meaningful discussion on which of the 2 sketches out of the 20 I should use for my final project garment design. Our exchange of feedback and opinions was really helpful for my final decision.

Assignment Progress

With the suggestions and guidance from my lecturer I managed to complete my moodboard completely to fit the required criteria.

Week 9

Class

Before this week's class I did some research about technical drawings and tried to make drafts of them. During class, my lecturer carefully guided me to revise any mistakes I had.

Assignment Progress

When I got back home, I worked on cleaning the technical drawings up and making it more neat and fixing the errors I had that my lecturer had advice me to correct as this week's progress.

Week 10

Class

By this week, we had already started drafting our final garment's pattern on mahjong paper. I had attempted to do it myself first and then consulted my lecturers about my patterns and confirming that I could proceed.

Assignment Progress

By the end of this week I had already bought the fabric for my final garments and could cut out the patterns to pin it on my fabric for cutting. I had also gotten my first ever injury while working on the progress.

Week 11

Class

As part of this week's class, we were free to continue our progress that we already had. In my case, I continued working on my progress of tracing the lines onto my fabric using tracing papers and fabric chalks.

Assignment Progress

Once I was done tracing the lines onto my fabric, I had cut out each pieces of fabric patterns and arranged them according to each look systematically following which pieces of the look that they are for. Once I had everything in order, I had started to sew.

Week 12

Class

Before class this week I had already finished most of my Look 1 garment. I was just left with sewing the white collar and finishing the sewing of the armscye.

My friend and classmate Akira had tried on the garment for me to present it to my lecturer to review it. He had a given me very useful feedback and we discussed suggestions to better up the garment.

Assignment Progress

By the end of the week, I had finished up sewing the remaining bits of the garment such as the white collar and armscye, thus finishing up the Look 1 garment. I had also finalized the final detail edits as well.

Week 13

Class

By the second last week of our semester, I had already finished my first garment piece for my Look 2. I brought it to class for my lecturer to review it and give feedback.

Assignment Progress

I had forgotten to add the pockets on my first garment piece of my Look 2 so I had fixed that later. Once I was done with the first garment piece, I started working on the second garment piece and managed to finish it on time for the final presentation.

Week 14

Final Presentation

This week is the last week of our semester, which also marks the week of our final presentation. To much of my thanks, my friend was willing to help me out with the modeling.

Reflection

Task 1: Research & Design Construction (Week 1-Week 3)

During the lessons I made several mistakes but used them as learning opportunities to improve. Initially I struggled with organizing my points effectively. To address this, I started drafting and planning content for my mind maps and slide presentation which made it easier to note down my findings about the topic and make the process of creating the mind maps and slides smoother. I learned to prioritize clarity and conciseness by focusing on essential points and logical flow. I implemented the valuable inputs from the lecturer, which significantly improved my final mind map and presentation production. These experiences taught me the importance of feedback and adapting my approach based on constructive criticism.

Task 2: Basic Elements Design (Week 4 - Week 6)

During the assignment of deconstructing white shirts to create 9 unique garment drapings (3 sleeves, 3 pockets, and 3 collars) I encountered several challenges and made mistakes. Initially, I struggled with planning and overcomplicated the designs. To improvise, I simplified my approach, focusing on one element at a time. Additionally, I faced difficulties in combining different shirt parts creatively. To overcome this, I searched up various inspirations on Pinterest and sought feedback from peers, which helped refined my designs. These experiences taught me the value of adaptability, patience, and continuous learning.

Final Project: Designing Essential Fashion (Week 9-Week 14)

Throughout this project, I encountered several challenges that helped me grow and learn to improvise. Creating the moodboard required thorough research and thoughtful integration of ideas. My lecturer’s guidance was really useful in order to align my work with the moodboard requirements. Drafting technical drawings was another area where I made mistakes. Through careful revision and advice from my lecturer, I improved the accuracy of my technical sketches.

Drafting the final garment patterns independently was challenging, but I learned the importance of self-reliance and seeking confirmation when needed. Cutting and tracing fabric patterns required meticulous attention to detail, and organizing the pieces systematically helped in the sewing process. In the end, my lecturer's feedback on the finished garments was invaluable. The constructive suggestions and final edits significantly enhanced the quality of my work, teaching me the importance of continuous improvement and attention to detail. This journey has been a profound learning experience, emphasizing the significance of perseverance, guidance, and improvisation.
