Week 1

Class

For the first class of this module, our lecturer first briefed us on the MIB and gave an overview of what the assignments this semester will be. In this class, we presented any ideas and early draft works we had.

Assignment Progress

As I had done some early research and brainstorming prior, I could present them to my lecturer today. My lecturer had gave me confirmation to continue on with the ideas I already had. I then continued my research during this class.

Week 2

Class

This week's class fell on a public holiday, due to that we did not have any class scheduled this week. Despite that, our lecturer had instructed us to continue on with our research work.

Assignment Progress

I continued to work on my research and ideas so that my presentation slides were more complete with the necessary content compared to last week. I had also contacted my lecturer to show him my progress and amend any mistakes if needed.

Week 3

Class

This week, I presented the remaining slides that I had revised to my lecturer. I had completed the research portion of my presentation, focusing on this semester’s theme of streetwear fashion. As this semester's final project involves it being a collaboration with Converse, I conducted in-depth research on the brand and selected a specific sneaker to serve as the main inspiration for my collection. I analyzed it's design and did a color study on the shoe I chose. I then developed design sketches that reflect both the streetwear theme and the characteristics of the chosen sneaker.

Week 4

Class

This week, I presented my first few design sketches to my lecturer, who provided some feedback and suggestions. Based on his opinions, I then discussed my ideas with him and revised my sketches to improve and align them with the guidance given.

Week 5

Class

This week, I printed out my first 10 design sketches that I finished, to present in class and receive feedback from my lecturer. Following that, I began developing technical drawings for my modular garment concept. I discussed my ideas with the lecturer, and together we finalized the direction I would take for both the modular components of the garment. Once the technical sketch for the modular design was completed, I created an additional set of 10 design sketches that incorporates the modular elements to explore potential garment designs for my final project. I also presented a fabric sample of my fabric manipulation that I will be doing for my final garments to my lecturer so we can have a brief idea on what my idea is meant to look like.

Assignment Progress

Over the weekend, I completed my final set of 10 design sketches and added color to bring the concepts to vision. I visited the fabric store to source potential fabric samples that could be used in the production of my final garments, exploring colors, textures and materials that align with my design vision.

Week 6

Class

This week, I continued developing my fabric manipulation samples and exploring various techniques that I could incorporate for them since I had also already finalized the designs of my final 2 garments with my lecturer. During class, my friends and I each worked on our individual progress. At one point, I helped out one of my classmates to prepare the mirror sequins for her fabric manipulation piece.

Assignment Progress

This week, I had began printing the patterns for the toile for our pattern class assignment. The pattern will be used for one of the garment looks in my collection. I also incorporated an image of my fabric manipulation sample into my design sketches to better visualize how the final garments will appear with the applied technique.

Week 7

Class

This week, I continued to work on my fabric manipulation samples. Turns out this week I also ended up helping another one of my friends with her fabric manipulation technique, which involved burning fabric as part of the process. Since it was our first time using a blowtorch, it took some time to get the hang of it.

Assignment Progress

As for my assignment progress, I had began cutting out the calico patterns for the toile for our pattern class assignment. With this, I could then better visualize what my actual final garment will look like. Based on this, I made a few adjustments to the pattern and updated my final design sketches accordingly.

Week 8

Class

This week I continued working on the patterns for one of my looks. Unfortunately on this day, I had not been feeling very well and it resulted to me having to leave class early to go and visit a clinic.

Assignment Progress

Despite me feeling unwell, I pushed myself during the weekend to make some progress on my patterns even if it was just a bit.

Week 9

Class

Despite me being unwell during the previous week, I managed to finish both the top and bottom pieces for my toile and brought it to class this week to show my lecturer.

Assignment Progress

Huge thanks to my model for taking the time to come to drop by to my class this week and wear the toile for me. It was incredibly helpful as both me and my lecturer were able to visualize how the final look would appear on a real body. My lecturer then gave me some feedback and suggestions on how the garment pieces looked and I will amend them accordingly.

Week 10

Class

Since I had finalized my toile with both lecturers from this class and the pattern class, I started working on cutting out the patterns for the second garment look that is in my collection. This allows me to assess and identify any adjustments needed before moving forward.

Assignment Progress

Over the weekend, I returned to the fabric store to purchase the necessary materials for my final garments, which includes jacket zippers and the required quantities of fabric.

Week 11

Class

In class this week, I focused on finishing up the rest of the adjustments for my remaining patterns and finalizing them.

Assignment Progress

I also began to carry out the fabric manipulation process on my actual garment material, which involved bleaching my black fabric. This process took a few days, as I allowed the fabric to dry between each stage. After the initial drying, I made further adjustments by spraying additional bleach in certain areas to refine the effect and achieve the desired look I had in mind. Once I was satisfied with the outcome, while waiting for the fabric to dry for the second time, I proceeded to place and pin the patterns intended for the unbleached sections of the black fabric and began cutting those pieces out.

Week 12

Class

This week, I continued making progress with what I have for the final project in class, steadily moving forward with the tasks and preparations. My progress included me beginning to cut out the remaining pattern pieces that are specifically using my other two fabrics which are the red and grey fabrics for my final garment looks.

Assignment Progress

By then, the black fabric which had been applied with the bleach manipulation technique was fully dried. I proceeded to place and pin the pattern pieces for the garment look that uses this specific fabric, preparing it for cutting and construction.

Week 13

Class

During class this week, I pinned several of my pattern pieces together in preparation for the garment construction. In addition to that, I had previously already started sewing some of the parts of the garments for my final looks.

For instances, I had already somewhat nearly finished the skirt for my female garment and had asked my friend to try it on to see how it looks like on an actual body. This helped me to evaluate the fit and it's appearance, and see if there needs to be any changes made.

Assignment Progress

My lecturers pointed out a misalignment in the pocket of my male garment, the fabric did not align properly when viewed from the side. Thanks to their guidance, I was able to identify the issue and make the necessary corrections to ensure a cleaner and more cohesive finish.

Week 14

Assignment Progress

This week marked the week of our final presentation. I completed the remaining sewing work on my garments and made final adjustments to ensure they were ready for showcasing. Thankfully, I was able to finish everything on time and felt satisfied with the outcome, with no regrets.

Final Presentation

I was really excited to present my collection this semester, as this has got to be one of my proudest works by far throughout my degree. A huge thank you to my friends who modeled for me, their presence truly brought my garments to life and made the overall presentation look exceptionally cool!

Reflection

Task 1: Research & Design Construction (Week 1-Week 3)

Throughout this assignment, I explored ideas visually, sparking new associations and allowing me to delve deeper into the subject of streetwear fashion, which was this semester’s collection theme. Our collaboration with Converse made the project even more meaningful, as it pushed me to engage in focused research on the brand. I studied Converse’s background, design philosophy, and iconic silhouettes before narrowing my inspiration to a specific sneaker. I analyzed its structural elements and conducted a color study, which guided my creative thinking and helped shape the direction of my collection. Through the use of visual tools such as the customer profile, story board, mood board, and concept board, I was able to narrate a cohesive story behind my collection. These tools helped translate my imagination into a logical and relevant design concept that aligned with both my personal expression and the streetwear aesthetic. From design development to the completion of final and technical drawings, I was able to transform my ideas into tangible forms. Each stage of the process, from visual exploration to practical execution strengthened my ability to create a collection that is both conceptually grounded and visually expressive. This assignment not only enhanced my technical skills but also encouraged me to express individuality through a well-reasoned and creative approach to fashion design.

Task 2: Fabric Manipulation & Sampling (Week 4 - Week 6)

This assignment allowed me to explore the interaction between fabrics and its forms through various new manipulation techniques, applying them to fashion in a three-dimensional context. I developed a deeper understanding of how fabrics behave, transform and can be manipulated to create unique design elements. Through hands-on experimentation, I discovered the potential of different materials and how their textures, weights, and reactions to certain processes, such as bleaching, layering or gathering technique can dramatically change the final outcome of a garment. These techniques opened new creative possibilities for innovating design, not only in fashion but also in fine art and textile development. This process helped me move beyond traditional garment construction and encouraged me to think about how surface effects, contrast and volume can enhance both the visual and tactile qualities of a piece. I was especially drawn to how manipulation techniques can add a sense of fullness or dimension, giving the garment more character and depth. Overall, the experience strengthened my understanding of material exploration and taught me to be more experimental and intentional with fabric choices. It pushed me to see fabric not just as a base material, but as a tool for artistic expression and innovation in fashion design.

Final Project: Fashion Collab Athleisure RTW Collection: Taylors X Converse (Week 7 -Week 14)

This assignment offered a unique and valuable experience in understanding the dynamics of fashion collaboration, specifically how to create a dialogue between my personal design identity and the established brand like Converse. It challenged me to step into the unknown and approach the process with an experimental mindset, while still remaining true to Converse’s core values and streetwear roots. Through extensive research, I studied the brand’s history, mission and design language, identifying the key characteristics that define their identity, functionality, youth-driven energy, and a strong cultural presence rooted in music, sport and self-expression. I selected a specific Converse sneaker as my primary inspiration and explored its silhouette, color palette, and detailing, which guided the direction of my collection for this semester. Building on that foundation, I projected my own narrative into the designs, focusing on creating a cohesive and commercially viable collection that could resonate with Converse’s audience while introducing new forms and ideas. Each of the two looks I created consists of four pieces, blending modularity, urban edge, and artistic expression to reflect the spirit of contemporary streetwear. One key learning experience I encountered during this assignment was a technical issue in my male garment. My lecturers pointed out a misalignment in the pocket when viewed from the side. Although it was a small detail, it significantly impacted the overall finish of the piece. Their feedback made me realize the importance of precision and attention to detail, especially in the garment construction process. It taught me that successful design is not just about creativity, but also craftsmanship and refinement. Overall, this assignment pushed me to balance creativity, brand alignment, technical skill and market relevance. It allowed me to grow not only in terms of design development and concept building but also in professionalism and execution.
